My wife and I recently purchased a new car from a reputable dealer. We had gone to two different dealers to negotiate, and ending up purchasing at the second dealer.

During negotiations, we were surprised that our sales rep at *both* dealers asked to take our credit card with them to show their manager with our offer. This happened after the 2nd or 3rd round of negotiating, and in both cases we refused.

Both reps said they wanted the card to show their manager that we were serious about purchasing.

It’s been 7 years since we last bought a new car, and at that time we weren’t asked for our card. I’m curious: why are dealers asking for them nowadays? Is it a negotiating ploy? Do they try to secretly conduct a credit check without permission (they already had our name & address)?

Some more details:

1. We had already told them we were going to pay cash, and didn’t need financing.

2. I had read that dealers can not do a credit check without your permission, and that whenever you hand over your license for a test drive you should specifically say they do not have your permission to do a credit check.

4. We were just surprised that *both* dealers asked for it, on the same day!

3. When we told them no, we jokingly asked if they wanted to see a suitcase full of cash, too!

I saw a similar question being asked about a car with a few hundred miles. This however is a different story. I am looking at a 2006 Mercury Milan with 2800 miles. The dillership owner has been driving it for awhile, but it still quallifies for 2006 Ford special financing (0% for 72 months) that only new 2006 cars are elligible for. Can depreciation on this car lower the asking price by a couple of thousands, because this is a used car now? Thank you guys!

I am looking for something that is brand new, that will run awhile, with not a bunch of problems. The car doesn’t have to have power everying, or all the new electornics most new cars have today. I just want something that I can aford without going into debt over. I would only like a 3 year loan or lease.

I actually bought a new car back in Nov. ‘02. Mits. Lancer ‘03. Well, I regret that. I got totally ripped off. I am still paying for that car plus I have a balloon payment (the interest) coming up in Nov. ‘07. I know I’m going to be needing a new car soon. I am giving myself some extra time before I buy so I can make the right decision. I narrowed my choices to 2 cars: MINI Cooper/ Toyota Matrix. I ask: How can I haggle prices down? How can I find out what are the taxes in my area? How can get a great loan with my bank? I think I have excellent or almost excellent credit. What advice can you guys give me? (The reason why I’m getting a new car is because my boyfriend is going to be using my Mits. He had to sell his car when we moved. We are both young and need some wise advice.

I am a very good salesman. I am about to look for a job at a new car lot. I have never been a car salesman, but have alot of experience buying cars. I’m not looking for opinions on car salesmen, only facts about which is the best dealerships to work for. Ex. Volume dealers etc? Toyota or Chevrolet? Also what should I expect out of my commission salary??
